Make It Yourself

Dry skin can be a real problem to deal with during the winter months.  If your hands are feeling chapped and in need of extra attention, moisturizing lotion bars are a perfect solution.

These bars are very easy to make and, if you have a little tin, you can carry them with you wherever you go.  They are also lovely to package in burlap with pretty ribbons and sprigs of dried herbs to give as gifts.

This recipe uses Frankincense essential oil, which has a warm scent appropriate for both women and men and provides extra nourishing for dry, chapped skin.

Ingredients: (Makes 4–6 bars)

  • 1 cup beeswax
  • 1 cup coconut oil
  • 1 cup shea butter
  • 20-30 drops Frankincense

Directions:

  • Combine and melt (microwave or double boiler) beeswax, coconut oil, and shea butter.
  • Add Frankincense essential oil.
  • Pour or spoon into mold of choice.

You can make these bars with single essential oils or limitless combinations.  I always encourage you to experiment with your favorite oils, be creative, and have fun!  Here are some combinations for inspiration:

  • Frankincense + Myrrh
  • Frankincense + Bergamot
  • Lavender and Lemongrass
  • Grapefruit + Douglas Fir
  • Peppermint + Rosemary
  • Sandalwood + Wild Orange
