Pomander is from the French term pomme d'ambre.  Pomander balls were an early form of aromatherapy from the Renaissance period and were typically worn or carried.

Pomander balls are typically made in modern times by studding whole dried cloves into an orange and letting it dry to cure, which scents the air and even helps keep moths away.
